Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins announces road improvement scheme on Donegall Street, Belfast
Date published:
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced that a £303,000 carriageway and footway resurfacing scheme on Donegall Street, Belfast will commence on Monday 25 May 2026.
The scheme will include both carriageway and footway resurfacing along Donegall Street from its junction with Waring Street to its junction with Royal Avenue.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins said:
“ This is a substantial investment for the city centre which will deliver significant benefits for local businesses, road users and visitors. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our road network. Donegall Street is within the Cathedral Conservation Area and I am pleased to be able to sympathetically carry out the resurfacing works by using granite kerbs along the length of the works. I recognise that there will be some disruption while these essential works are carried out and I would like to thank the businesses and local community for their patience and cooperation during this period.”
To facilitate the resurfacing scheme a one-way continuous lane closure will be in operation on Donegall Street. Traffic travelling from Royal Avenue/York Street towards Waring Street will be accommodated on Donegall Street, whilst road users travelling from Bridge Street will be diverted via North Street.
In addition a number of full road closures will be necessary over a series of nights (7pm to 6am) to complete carriageway surfacing operations. The dates of these full closures will be subject to progress on the scheme and, once confirmed, the dates will be published on the TrafficwatchNI website (www.trafficwatchni.com).
The Department has carefully planned the works and traffic management arrangements to minimise disruption as far as possible. However, whilst access for businesses will be maintained where practicable, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time for their journeys. Road users should comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions it is anticipated that the works will be complete by 8 July 2026. The Department will keep the public informed of any significant changes to the programme.
