The publication is produced by the DVA Statistics Branch of the Department for Infrastructure (DfI), and contains summary volumes on the vehicle, driver, and theory tests conducted by the DfI’s Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA).

Key Points

Vehicle Testing

In August 2023, the DVA conducted 79,584 full vehicle tests, which is 31% (18,732) above the five-year August average (60,852).

It has delivered 398,656 full vehicle tests and 66,892 retests, totalling 465,548 vehicle tests in this financial year to date.

Private cars accounted for 81% (64,540) of all full vehicle tests conducted this month (79,584).

Driving Practical Testing

The DVA conducted 5,432 driver tests in August 2023, some 26% (1,128) above the five-year August average (4,304).

It has delivered 26,254 driver tests in this financial year to date.

Private cars accounted for just over 8 in every 10 (4,403) driver tests conducted this month (5,432).

The DVA received 6,154 applications for a driving test in August 2023.


Driver Theory Testing

During August 2023 the DVA conducted 8,124 theory tests, just over 22% (1,473) above the five-year August average (6,651), and it has delivered 38,394 theory tests in this financial year to date.

Private cars accounted for almost 9 in every 10 (7,131) theory tests conducted this month (8,124).

In August 2023 the DVA received 9,130 theory test applications.

  2. The release presents statistics on vehicle, driver, and theory tests conducted during August 2023, together with trend series over the previous nine financial years. 
  3. We source vehicle and driver data from administrative data sources within the DVA, whilst DVSA supply theory-testing data. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) took over the contract for theory testing from Pearson on 4 September 2021.
