Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins visited Christian Brothers’ Primary School in Armagh where she reiterated her commitment to working proactively to make our roads safer.

The Minister was speaking as she carried out a series of road safety engagements with schools in Counties Fermanagh, Tyrone and Armagh.

    Minister Kimmins said:

“I was delighted to visit Christian Brothers’ Primary School in Armagh and want to thank the Principal, Paul Doyle and the school community for their warm welcome. Road safety is a priority for me I am acutely aware that children and young people are amongst the most vulnerable groups using our roads so I welcomed the opportunity to discuss road safety issues and to consider how we can work together to address them.

“I am pleased to say that the school has already benefited from a number of key road safety upgrades including the installation of a part time 20mph speed limit and central hatch markings and school road markings along the frontage. There is also a PUFFIN crossing on Irish Street in the vicinity of the school entrance which allows a safe crossing for pedestrians to get to and from the school. I have also asked my officials to carry out an assessment of the existing signs and road markings to ensure they are appropriate for the area.

“I am also acutely aware that parking around schools in an issue at peak times.  We do however all need to be mindful of others, particularly vulnerable road users, when parking. Inconsiderate pavement parking is above all a road safety issue. I would ask people to consider if the car journey is absolutely necessary or if in some cases walking or cycling to school is an option.

"As road users we all have a personal responsibility to behave in a way that keeps ourselves and others safe. As the Minister responsible for the road network I am also very aware of the significant role my Department has on improving road safety and getting that message across to the public, and the school visits today allow us to have important discussions about making our roads safer for everyone.”
