Speaking as he addressed council members this afternoon, Divisional Roads Manager, Conor Loughrey said:

“At a strategic level the A6 and A5 are key schemes which will significantly benefit the North West of the province. Construction works have commenced on the A6 Randalstown to Castledawson dualling scheme and the section between Dungiven and Derry City is at procurement stage.  The Public Inquiry hearing on the A5 has been completed and subject to a satisfactory outcome from the Public Inquiry process and completion of the statutory processes it is intended that construction on a section which extends from Newbuildings to north of Strabane could commence in November / December 2017.

“At a local level the resurfacing scheme at Killeter Road and Ferguson Crescent in Castlederg was completed along with a number of other resurfacing projects which are planned to commence later in the year.  These include the A38 Lifford Road in Strabane and on the B530 Rossdowney Road. Local Transport and Safety Measure schemes will also be undertaken including a sightline improvement scheme on the B48 Lisnaragh Road in Plumbridge and traffic calming on the Lonemoor Road. These projects will realise significant benefits for both the local community and commuters.

“However, the indicative budget outlined by the Secretary of State in April does mean that there are likely to be knock-on impacts for services including routine maintenance of the road network and in this area, the Department is likely to be reliant on additional resources becoming available. We understand the implications of the limited service and its long term impacts on the network and we are doing our best to deliver routine maintenance within the allocated budget.

“The Department’s objective is to continue to deliver routine road maintenance services at the current level for as long as possible. While services will be constrained, we are planning to meet all essential public safety requirements.”

Concluding, Conor Loughrey said:

“It is also worth noting other projects in the area recently completed, including new zebra crossings at Meeting House Street in Strabane at the new footbridge and on Strabane Old Road, Gobnascale.  Resurfacing work has been carried out on two sections of the A2 Clooney Road at Caw Brae as well as from Judges Road to Temple Road on the A2 Buncrana Road. Resurfacing on the A5 Mulvin Road at Victoria Bridge has also been completed.  Vehicle restraints have also been replaced in the city at A515 Madams Bank Road and C577 Southway.”
