The Penalty Fares (Increase) Order (Northern Ireland) 2016

The Department has published a consultation document outlining proposals to make a Statutory Rule entitled The Penalty Fares (Increase) Order (Northern Ireland) 2016.


Consultation description

The Penalty Fares System was designed to protect the majority of customers from the minority of people who travel without a valid ticket for the journey they are making. Where an increase in penalty fares is being introduced a new Order is required to make provision for it.

The Department considers that any penalty fare amount should act as an effective deterrent to fare evasion and the current penalty of £20.00, which was set in 2008, is too low. The Department are proposing to increase the penalty fare to £50.

The Department is keen to hear the views of as many interested individuals or groups as possible to its proposals. If you are interested in making your views known a copy of the consultation can be obtained from:
