A6 Randalstown to Castledawson - Notice of Intention to Make a Vesting Order

Consultation opened on 19 January 2015. Closing date 20 March 2015.

Summary

The scheme located on the North Western Corridor which links Belfast to Londonderry, will provide a dual carriageway from the M22 Motorway at Randalstown to the Castledawson Roundabout. A total of 14km of new dual carriageway will be constructed as part of the scheme. This will be in two sections:
1. 7.3km from the end of the M22 at Randalstown to the Toome Bypass
2. 6.7 km from Toome Bypass to the Castledawson roundabout

The proposed road is a high standard dual carriageway. It has no private accesses, no central reserve crossovers and with the minimum of junctions. This standard of dual carriageway has considerable benefits for the road user.

The draft Statutory Orders (Trunk Road Order and Vesting Order) and environmental statement for the proposed scheme were published in March 2007. A public inquiry into the scheme was held in November 2007 and the Inspector recommended that the road go ahead. However, he also recommended that the design of the connections to Bellshill Road and Annaghmore Road, near Castledawson, be revisited as they were not acceptable in their designed form. An alternative grade-separated junction at Annaghmore Road/Bellshill Road has been proposed and planning permission for this was granted in December 2014.

The Notice of Intention to Proceed and Direction Order was published in March 2011 for the scheme as a whole. The Notice of Intention to make a Vesting Order has now been republished for the proposed work in Planning Application.
