A31 Magherafelt Bypass - overview

DfI Roads Western Division progressed the design and development of the A31 Magherafelt Bypass between Castledawson and Moneymore. Details of the scheme is detailed below.

Status

  • Constructed

Cost

  • £35 million

Overview

The 6km scheme entailed the construction of a single carriageway, with sections of 2+1 overtaking lanes, through a largely green field site to the east of Magherafelt between the A31 Moneymore Road (just south of Magherafelt) and the A6 Castledawson Roundabout to the north.  New roundabouts were provided where the new road bisects the Ballyronan Road and Aughrim Road with other side roads (Killyfaddy Road, Loves Road and Killyneese Road) bridged over.

Initial traffic surveys indicate a significant reduction in traffic volumes through the existing road network within the town centre and aims to improve road safety, reduce congestion and thereby improve the town centre environment and journey times.
