Please note that DVA services were impacted by industrial strike action on 22nd September 2023 and 18th January 2024 so testing volumes for these months are lower than would have been the case had these been routine working days.  

Vehicle Testing

In January 2024, the DVA conducted 83,755 full vehicle tests, which is 19% (13,085) above the five-year January average (70,670) and the second highest January figure in the series, from 2014/15.

The DVA has delivered 942,784 vehicle tests in this financial year to date, comprising 809,770 full vehicle tests and 133,014 retests.

Private cars accounted for 84% (70,033) of all full vehicle tests conducted this month.

The DVA received 113,696 applications for a full vehicle test during January 2024.

Driving Practical Testing

The DVA conducted 4,870 driver tests in January 2024, 20% (812) above the five-year January average (4,058).

The DVA has delivered 52,734 driver tests in this financial year to date.

Private cars accounted for 84% (4,098) of driver tests conducted in January 2024.

The DVA received 5,746 applications for a driving test in January 2024.

Driver Theory Testing

During January 2024, the DVA conducted 6,743 theory tests, 58% (2,485) above the five-year January average (4,258).

The DVA has delivered 73,627 theory tests in this financial year to date.

Private cars accounted for 86% (5,796) of theory tests conducted this month.

In January 2024, the DVA received 9,921 applications for a theory test.

  2. The release presents statistics on vehicle, driver, and theory tests conducted during January 2024, together with trend series over the previous nine financial years. 
  3. We source vehicle and driver data from administrative data sources within the DVA, whilst DVSA supply theory-testing data. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) took over the contract for theory testing from Pearson on 4 September 2021.
  4. ‘DVA Monthly Tests Conducted Statistics’ is published every month at pre-announced release dates, which are available from the GOV.UK website.
