Department to progress reconstruction scheme for Gilnahirk Road, Belfast

Date published: 15 November 2023

A reconstruction and resurfacing scheme for the Gilnahirk Road, Belfast is being progressed as a matter of urgency following severe damage caused to the road during recent storms.

DfI latest news

The scheme will repair and resurface the section of carriageway between Elsmere Heights and Gilnahirk Road West.

This section of road remains closed and the Department is appealing to road users to respect the closure, which has been put in place to protect public safety, as the road is currently structurally unsafe and at risk of subsidence. Please follow the diversionary route which is clearly signed on approach to the closure.

Temporary traffic management measures are legally enforceable and anyone travelling through a road closure is not just putting themselves and others at risk, but could also be liable to a £60 fixed penalty notice and three penalty points.

The Department will endeavour to complete the scheme and reopen the road as soon as possible, however public safety must take precedence. Preliminary works and investigations are ongoing until the reconstruction scheme can commence in full.
